At Homeplus we believe in and seen the power of art to help transform, inspire and connect people. Art is a powerful way of empowering people, it can give a voice to asylum seekers, refugees and destitute migrants through encouraging self expression and honouring their story and journey. It can also help us to escape from our story of past and present allowing both ourselves and others the opportunity to see beyond the labels that are placed on us. In doing so we all get the chance to see that regardless of labels, ethnicity, nationality or religion we are all the same and want the same things in life. This is why art can help us transcend the barriers that are in our minds by helping to humanise, inspire and connect people who otherwise may not have had the opportunity or willingness to be in a room or gathering with people who they previously may have deemed ‘different’ or ‘not us.’ It is for these reasons that Homeplus feels that art is a great way to help challenge stereotypes, prejudice, racism and discrimination. As well as giving the opportunity for asylum seekers, refugees and destitute migrants to build relationships and friendships, integrate into society, realise their worth, and feel they belong in a society that they come to call home.
